Editorial Review:

Product Description:
Alastair Reynolds's Revelation Space trilogy is "one of the most impressive serial space operas of recent times" (Locus). The award-winning author continues to forge the future of science fiction with Century Rain.

In the far future, the technological disaster known as the Nanocaust left Earth uninhabitable. Archaeologist Verity Auger continues to explore the remnants of the planet's environment. But Verity is needed to examine something far more important-the discovery of mid-twentieth century Earth at the far end of a wormhole. And on this alternate world is a device capable of destroying both Earths if Verity cannot find the man preparing to detonate it in time.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Very enjoyable
I am a big Alistair Reynolds fan and I enjoyed this book a lot. It is rather different to his Revelation Spaces series (Chasm City is, for me, his best work), but the inventiveness of the ideas is well up to the usual standards. It does have a few points that could be improved, but it is certainly more readable than most of the other reviewers seem to think, at least in my opinion. His invocation of an alternate Paris of 1959 is sport on. I particularly appreciated his mention of the Pont de Concorde ... Read More

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Failed marriage
Reynolds attempts to blend hard-boiled detective fiction with science fiction and does not come up with a very good book. I put it aside after reading somewhat more than half. I shan't finish, as, by any measure "Century Rain" is poorly written: the plot is predictable; the characters poorly drawn; and the dialogue leaden. I recommend choosing another book by Reynolds.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - So it's not hard sf...
Don't be afraid. There's a good solid story, some fun contrasts between E1 (presumably our Earth in a future incarnation) and E2, an alternative Earth preserved by mysterious aliens who never actually make an appearance. Despite it's very different tone from other work by Reynolds, I enjoyed this book for its quirky noir detective story, the odd mix of high and low-tech, and the character development, which is more down to earth, dare I say, cosier, than previous novels. The science is less obtrusive in ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Good but not great
This book is not set in the Revelation Space universe like Amazon claims.

It is a detective story on 2 levels, has a good pace. However the motivations of the antagonists are not clear and thus do not make much sense. Still, this is a good book like most from AR.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Not my favorite Alistair Reynolds book
For those of you who don't know Alistair Reynolds, buy Chasm City or Pushing Ice instead. For those of you who, like me, have read most of his books already, the following is for you: Interesting science-fiction premise, familiar Alistair Reynolds blend of noir and hard science fiction, a bit disappointing in the character development and 'page-turner' aspects. I still liked it, so if you want to read one of his novels and have read everything else, go for it, you'll still enjoy it.
